Society and Computing is hosting a discussion about the Coded Bias documentary and its implications on society as a whole. Join SoCo on Friday, March 26 at 7:30 PM. Watch the film before the discussion session and come prepared to talk about some of the topics listed below. This is open to all UB students, regardless of year or major. UB faculty and staff are also welcome to attend.

Coded Bias follows MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini as she discovers the ways pre-existing inequalities and biases are coded into the seemingly objective systems. Her story begins with the discovery that her own facial recognition project couldn’t register dark-skinned faces like her own accurately. From there, she learns how surveillance systems are often tested on communities of color and finally pushes for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all.
