Jean-Luc Nancy “How Does a World Come to Its End?”
One says it’s the end of the world. For certain, one world is coming to an end. The Western world. What does the end of a world mean? That a spirit is extinct. Since Marx, we have known that we are deprived of spirit. What is “spirit”? It is what ventures to the limits of the conceivable and achievable. With each world’s end (that of Antiquity, that of the Mediterranean world before the Common Era, that of 16th century China, among many others), there is a loss or a mutation of spirit, of the knowledge of limits and their overcoming.
Jean-Luc Nancy is a philosopher and Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Strasbourg, he is also the Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel Chair at The European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. His major works include The Inoperative Community, The Experience of Freedom, The Sense of the World, Being Singular Plural, Corpus, The Truth of Democracy, and the two volumes of The Deconstruction of Christianity. Among his recent books—After Fukushima: The Equivalence of Catastrophes,Identity: Fragments, Frankness, Doing, Sexistence, Un trop human virus, La peau fragile du monde, and Mascarons de Macron.
Juan Manuel Garrido Wainer is Professor of Philosophy at the Universidad Alberto Hurtado, Santiago, Chile.
