“Reclaiming Our Ancestors: Descendants of 19th-Century African American Activists Share Their Stories”

The descendants of former slaves will gather at UB for a groundbreaking workshop to reconnect participants with their ancestors, further reveal their family histories and bring new voice to rich historical stories often silenced by the difficulties of tracing obscure and hard-to-follow genealogical paths.

Regina E. Mason: Descendant of William Grimes, author of Life of William Grimes, the Runaway Slave (1837)

Lynne M. Jackson: Descendant of Dred Scott, who sued for freedom in Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857)

Rhonda M. Brace: Descendant of Jeffrey Brace, narrator of The Blind African Slave (1810)

Descendants of Solomon Northup, Lewis G. Clarke, Moses Grandy, and Venture Smith will also be introduced.
