“Art Activism in the Classroom: Context, Principles and Collaboration as Trans/Feminist Practice.”

In this presentation-workshop, Ames Hawkins (whose work is in the exhibit Ill at Ease: Dis-ease and Art, now on display) discusses how development of courses in art activism and her work in socially engaged arts practice has resulted in the development of a trans/feminist pedagogy and classroom praxis. She begins with an overview of the relevance of AIDS art activism, and then presents eight principles of art activism to provide context for discussion regarding the interests and desires of those in attendance. Overall, the goal is for participants to leave with strategies and resources to help them engage in art activism both as educators and practitioners.
