Thirteen ways of looking at institutional history: A model for interconnected digital exhibits from science archives

Venkat Srinivasan is a researcher at the National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bangalore, India, where he leads a team constructing an experimental digital archive exhibit. In dramatic new modes, this pulls archival material into coherent stories connecting personal narratives and established scientific records, illuminating scientific process in novel ways. He has been a research engineer at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford, and is an independent science writer with work in The Atlantic, Scientific American online, Nautilus, Aeon, Wired, and the Caravan. He will discuss the in-process digital exhibit as an example of the intersection of science journalism, collaborative scientific research and oral history.

Oral history in science: Engaging qualitative and anecdotal data in environmental engineering research

Douglas Lambert is a PhD candidate in Environmental Engineering at the University at Buffalo and Director of Technology for The Randforce Associates, a consulting firm led by historian Michael Frisch focused on digital oral history content management. In a major NSF project focused on groundwater contamination and restoration, Lambert and researchers from four disciplines have used oral history to explore complex issues not otherwise reachable in the technology-oriented publications of engineering. He led the design and execution of content management and controlled vocabulary to permit research within and across the project’s long-form, open-ended oral history interview recordings.
