James H. McNulty Chair Reading and Reception for Myung Mi Kim
March 13, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
The College of Arts and Sciences invites you to a reading and reception to celebrate Myung Mi Kim’s appointment as the James H. McNulty Chair in English.
An award-winning poet with six major poetry collections, Kim—a professor of English and recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in 2009—makes deliberate use of fragments and white space to convey fracture and disruption, excision and rearrangement. Her work explores complex themes of dislocation, colonization, and immigration, “reaching for a relationship with readers that owns to and remains critical of the political and systematic nature of that encounter, often thematizing reading itself in the process.” (C.J. Martin, On ‘Penury’)
The event will include opening remarks from Robin Schulze, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Cristanne Miller, chair of the Department of English, and a reading by Kim, with a reception to follow.
