The Humanities Institute is pleased to announce renowned author Margaret Atwood, as the 2017-18 Eileen Silvers Visiting Professor in the Humanities.

Recipient of the Booker Prize, Arthur C. Clarke Award, Governor General’s Award, the PEN Pinter Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Book Critics Circle (2017), Margaret Atwood is the author of more than fifty volumes of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and children’s literature. Deeply engaged with history and prophetic about incipient dystopias, her best-known novels include Surfacing, The Edible Woman, The Robber Bride, The Blind Assassin, the MaddAddam trilogy (Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood, and MaddAddam), and the 1985 classic, The Handmaid’s Tale, propelled to new fame this year through an acclaimed Hulu original series, which is about to begin its second season. A six-hour mini-series based on her 1996 novel, Alias Grace, was released last fall by CBC and Netflix.

Ms. Atwood will deliver the keynote address on Friday, March 9, at 8 p.m. at the University at Buffalo Center for the Arts to open “Humanities to the Rescue,” a weekend of programming presented by the university’s Humanities Institute, that also includes an environmental film series that continues through the remainder of that weekend.
