Film Screening: “Kings Park: Stories from an American Mental Institution” (Lucy Winer, 2011)

September 12, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Advance screening of Lucy Winer’s “Kings Park: Stories from an American Mental Institution”, prior to her Sept. 21st talk, “Lessons from the Asylum.”

When filmmaker Lucy Winer set out to make a film about her commitment to Kings Park State Hospital as a teenager in the late 1960’s, she had little idea of the life-changing odyssey on which she was embarking. As the title “Lessons from the Asylum” suggests, in this presentation, Winer will delve into the challenges she faced and the insights she gained over the eleven years it took to make this film. Speaking in conjunction with historian Nancy Tomes, PhD, who will be giving a talk (“Recovery as concept, model and movement, in the mental health field”) the next day, Winer will give special attention to her own experience and ideas of recovery and the impact of the creative process on her personal growth and well-being.

This event is co-sponsored by: The SUNY Research Foundation Network of Excellence in “Health, Disability, Medicine and the Arts-Humanities”; the Departments of Anthropology, English, History, and Media Study; the School of Architecture and Design; and the UB Gender Institute.
