Glitch is an error, a malfunction. Glitch is a broken system. Glitch is something gone awry.

Glitch is also widely embracing these flaws. Glitch shows the beauty in imperfections. Glitch can provide opportunities to change, remix, and create something never seen before. Glitch is the cycle of destruction and creation.

This workshop will introduce participants to the world of glitch art, or the practice of purposefully creating errors in images for aesthetics and artistic expression. We’ll explore a brief history of the practice, and then participate in hands-on demonstrations of how to create your own work. Please come with a laptop and a digital picture/pictures you would like to practice on.

Joan Nobile (she/her) is a queer artist-scholar based in Buffalo, NY. She is currently an MFA candidate at the University at Buffalo and works in the Media Study department as an Adjunct Instructor. She received her BA in Media Production at SUNY Buffalo State. Her multidisciplinary practice involves works in film, video, zines, and video games. Broadly, her research focuses on media theory and critique, gaming, cyberfeminism, and parasocial relationships. On the rare occasion she’s not working, Joan enjoys visiting farmer’s markets, reading & watching non-fiction, and spending too much time playing cozy indie video games.
