Community Event | AKG Art Museum presents a Conversation with Bakari Kitwana & Janne Sirén, “Run Towards Fear: Hip Hop, Art, and the Discovery of Identity”
May 3 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
If you think that you don’t belong in this museum, this talk is for you. Please join the Buffalo AKG as we host a panel discussion that will explore the question of whether people make art, or whether art makes people, with renowned Hip-Hop scholar Bakari Kitwana (UB Distinguished Visiting Scholar, Department of Africana and American Studies) and Janne Sirén. This presentation and conversation will be moderated by Keiah Shauku.
Kitwana, who served as the editor for The Source magazine, has had a unique perch from which to observe the changes in Hip-Hop culture, African American culture, and international youth culture. His extensive background will contribute to a robust discussion.
In Run Towards Fear, the AKG will explore, with its panelists and audience, how both Hip-Hop and modern and contemporary art were created in response to culture, as well as their roles in shaping it.
This event is free and open to the public. It will take place in the Lipsey Auditorium located in the Knox Building.
