Carl Dennis

Carl Dennis is an emeritus professor of English at UB. He taught at the university from 1966 until his retirement in 2001, after which he served for several years as an artist-in-residence.

He is the winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize in poetry for his collection “Practical Gods” and, in addition to “Another Reason,” is the author of 12 other books, including “House of My Own” (1974), “The Outskirts of Troy” (1988), “Meeting with Time” (1992) and “Callings” (2010).

Dennis has received numerous honors and awards for his work, including fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts and, notably, the 2000 Ruth Lilly Prize from Poetry Magazine and the Modern Poetry Association for his contribution to American poetry.

Alan Feldman

Alan Feldman’s poetry has appeared in many magazines over the years—The Atlantic, The New Yorker, The Nation, Poetry, The Kenyon Review, The Southern Review, Ploughshares, Iowa Review, Threepenny Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, Yale Review, and others.

His full-length collection of poems, The Happy Genius (New York: Sun, 1978) won the 1979 Elliston Book Award for the best collection of poetry published by an independent press in the United States.

A Sail to Great Island was awarded the 2004 Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry and published by the University of Wisconsin Press.  This press has also published Feldman’s two latest books:  Immortality which won the 2016 Massachusetts Book Award in Poetry; and The Golden Coin, winner of the Four Lakes Prize, and available in March of 2018.

His work is represented in a number of anthologies, including The Best American Poetry 2001; 2011, The Best American Erotic Poems 1800-Present, and To Woo and To Wed: Poets on Love and Marriage.

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation have awarded him fellowships in poetry.

Feldman lives in Framingham, MA and, in the summer, in Wellfleet, MA, and currently offers free, drop-in poetry workshops in those towns.  (For his method, “Mockingbird:  Exploring Poetry through Imitation” see mockingbird.pdf .)  He is married to Nan Hass Feldman, an artist.
