Around the world the (re)emergence of nationalism, authoritarianism, and fundamentalism has given rise to a crisis of democracy. Whose voices are being heard? Whose voices are you listening to? What guides your voice?

The 2019 Buffalo Humanities Festival tackles the current crisis of democracy and the reclaiming of a democratic future through a collective reinvestment in community conversations.

Democracy and the Legacy of Racism: Ibram X. Kendi and Chenjerai Kumanyika in Conversation

  • Ibram X. Kendi – Author of Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America (2016 National Book Award for Non-fiction) and How to Be an Antiracist.
  • Chenjerai Kumanyika – Co-executive producer and co-host of the history podcast Uncivil.

Spotlight Speaker: Matt Taibbi

  • Matt Taibbi – Co-founder of The Beast, Rolling Stone journalist, and author of Hate Inc.: Why Today’s Media Makes us Despise One Another
  • Q+A session with Geoff Kelly, Investigative Post reporter, co-founder and former editor of The Public

The full festival day begins with a panel discussion on the role of the media on democracy, and continues with talks, performances, and community conversations. Lunch by West Side Bazaar and a closing reception featuring The Performance Truck, live music, and beer by Community Beer Works.
