Scholar Sessions

The Humanities Institute Annual Scholar session allows the Institute to showcase the work of UB’s outstanding humanities faculty to the larger Buffalo community and at the same time ensures that highly distinguished scholars are aware of the significance of the scholarly work taking place in the humanities at UB.   The program brings 2-3 renowned scholars to Buffalo to discuss the work of one of our most distinguished faculty members. Scholar Sessions include plenty of time for audience participation.

In Fall 2012 SUNY Distinguished Professor (Departments of Philosophy and Comparative Literature), Jorge J. E. Gracia, will be honored.

This year, we are inviting Dr. Kwame Anthony Appiah (Princeton University) and Dr. Ilan Stavans (Amherst College) to honor Prof. Jorge Garcia (Department of Philosophy and Department of Comparative Literature) and celebrate his work.

In Fall 2011 Distinguished Professor & James Agee Professor of American Culture (Department of English), Bruce Jackson, will be honored.

This event, entitled “Being There: The Work of Bruce Jackson“, focused on the work of Bruce Jackson with some comment on the special exhibition Full Color Depression: First Kodachromes from America’s Heartland. The session was introduced by Tim Dean, Professor of English at the University at Buffalo, and Tom Rankin (Duke University) and William Ferris (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) gave talks on Bruce Jackson’s work.

In Spring 2008 Professor of Philosophy, Carolyn Korsmeyer, was honored.

Carolyn Korsmeyer, professor of Philosophy and author of Making Sense of Taste: Food & Philosophy, was interviewed on the Odyssey radio program distributed by WBEZ-FM, Chicago Public Radio, a National Public Radio member station, as part of a series, “The History of the Senses,” in which she discusses the sense of taste. In 2006 Dennis Tedlock, the James H. McNulty Professor, English & Research Professor of Anthropology, was honored.
