The Translation Zone: Southeast Asian
Coordinators: Walter Hakala (English and Asian Studies Program) and Shantam Goyal (PhD candidate – English)
A combination of creative and theoretical work in translation, members will work on short and long translation projects for poetry, short and long fiction, and non-fiction prose from South Asian languages into English. Going by a slightly more expansive definition, this would include languages from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, Burma/Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Tibet, and Maldives. Our meetings will be an opportunity to discuss ongoing translation work which the members are involved in, and to grapple with the technical-political issues which accompany such work; this is why the name of the workshop is borrowed from influential translation theorist Emily Apter’s eponymous 2006 book. With time, we hope to autonomously publish our work in the form of a South Asian writing primer, lacking which we might consider sending proposals to established journals which invite work in translation.
