In recognition of February being Black History Month the UB Department of Indigenous Studies invites you to a talk in Indigenous Studies.

The framing and institutionalization of education for Black and Indigenous peoples has been tied to the assertions that contact with the white race, enslavement, and the settlement of Native lands are in and of themselves educational activities. This talk examines the intimacy between these schools and agricultural experiment stations, demonstration farms, and other forms of scientific farming. It will demonstrate how, not only people, but land, was being taught as part of agricultural education and functioned as a technology of settlement.

Bayley J. Marquez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of American Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park and an Indigenous scholar from the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. As an Indigenous scholar, she acknowledges that her work and scholarship takes place on Piscataway land, former plantation land, and within a land grant university funded by the seizure and sale of Indigenous lands. Her upcoming book project, Plantation Pedagogy: The Violence of Schooling in Black and Indigenous Space, will be available soon.
