Exploring fiction and film from Spain’s twenty-first century, Culleton is interested in the forces of the globalized world that bring people together. Some of us acknowledge global connectedness in an empirical sense, through the science of climate change, for example. Some acknowledge human connectedness in a more intuitive way, which in this project is articulated through the concept of affect. Spain Connected is an ethical project. Culleton’s logic moves from a sense of connection to a sense of beholdenness: if we are all connected, in what ways are we responsible to one another?

About Colleen Culleton, Associate Professor of Spanish and Catalan Studies, Department of Romance Languages and Literatures

Colleen Culleton studies contemporary Spanish and Catalan fiction and film. She is the author of Literary Labyrinths: Narrating Memory and Place in Franco-Era Barcelona, which examines how an ideologically driven revision of the urban landscape in Barcelona led to a sense of disorientation in how the city is remembered. Her early interest in social space has evolved to be an examination of environmental care. Her most recent work approaches globalization through the lens of ecology, taking into account theories of affect and the experience of crisis in the twenty-first century.
