PLASMA presents animator NG’ENDO MUKII

The Department of Media Study’s PLASMA (Performances, Lectures, And Screenings in Media Art)​ will feature a screening and discussion with animator, film director, photographer, and writer NG’ENDO MUKII. An independent filmmaker working in Nairobi, NG’ENDO MUKII is most well known for Yellow Fever, her documentary animation exploring Western influences on African women’s ideals of beauty. Her films have won multiple international awards, including Silver Hugo for The Best Animated Short at the Chicago International Film Festival, Best Short Film at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, Best Animation at Kenya’s Kalasha Awards, and the Encounters Immersive Grand Prix for her first 360 film, Nairobi Berries.

In addition to her award-winning shorts, MUKII has worked on short animated and 360 films commissioned by international and local organizations including the Huffington Post and Plan International. Her 2020 film, Kanyoko Boutique, was commissioned for VIMEO’s Stories in Place series. Her work has been funded by the New Dimensions Virtual Reality program (South Africa), Docubox Kenya, and Focus Features Africa First (USA) grants. A Berlinale Talents Alum, she holds a Master of Arts from the Royal College of Art (2012) in London, and a Bachelor of Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design (2006), USA. She is currently a Professor of Practice at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts based at Tufts University in Boston and is a writer on multiple upcoming Netflix series.

Brief remarks addressed to the students who are enrolled in PLASMA as a course will begin at 6:00 PM sharp. NG’ENDO MUKII’s presentation will begin at 6:10 pm EST. In advance of tonight’s screening and discussion, attendees are encouraged to watch Yellow Fever (2013, 7 minutes) and Kanyoko Boutique (2020, 9 minutes).

As always, PLASMA lectures are free and open to the UB community and the public.​
