January 3rd application for Folger Institute Workshop on “American Regional Shakespeares” IN BUFFALO, April 28th-May1st, 2022

November 1, 2021

From April 28th through May 1st, 2022 the Folger Institute will sponsor the second of two spring workshops on “American Regional Shakespeares”—on “’Gilding the Guilt’: The Gilded Age, Craft Production, and the Construction of Cultural Capital”—here in Buffalo, where it will take advantage of the outstanding European great books collections and Arts and Craft productions archived at the downtown Buffalo and Erie County Library, the UB Special Collections, and the Roycroft Campus, and the physical layout of our city and region, to track the contending narratives and counter-narratives about the site(s) of cultureproduction during the Gilded Age and today.

You can read about the program at the official 2021-2022 Folger Institute Scholarly Programs website and you will find more details about the Buffalo program in the attached draft program.
https://www.folger.edu/2021-2022-folger-institute-scholarly-programs

The Folger Institute itself will send some dozen or so scholarly applicants from its various consortium member schools, and we can recruit a similar number of local applicants to the two intensive library Workshop days (Friday and Saturday) from qualified graduate students, faculty members, and independent scholars in our community.  (The Workshop will also be bracketed by more general keynote and tour events which will be open to the wider community.)

In doing so, we will follow an abbreviated form of the Folger’s own application procedure at https://www.folger.edu/application-information-and-guidelines

Contact information, including instituional affiliation where relevant

Faculty applicants should note their ranks, specifying emeritus, associate, assistant, reader, visiting, adjunct, lecturer, etc. Graduate students must specify if they are a PhD candidate, PhD student (pre-qualifying exams), or MA student. Independent scholars with a demonstrable interest in the topic may also apply.

A brief Statement of Research Plans or Objectives for this program

The statement should address how the applicant’s current research, pedagogy, academic background, and relevant scholarly interests will contribute to and benefit from the particular program’s discussion and discoveries. It should address the specific overlap between the program’s description and what the applicant hopes to gain and to give through participation. Thus a statement which merely describes the applicant’s current research project will not suffice. The statement should not exceed three double-spaced pages.

A CV

Please attach an abbreviated CV. It should include the information most relevant to the program in question, including publications, conference papers, courses taken, courses taught, Folger Institute participation, and foreign languages with degree of competence. Please note that the application review committee will read only the first four pages of your CV.

We warmly invite you to apply (please send all materials to bbono@buffalo.edu ), and to forward this invitation to other specialist colleagues whom you think might be interested in it.
The deadline for applications is Monday, January 3, 2022.
