Aaron Shulman will talk about the singular Panero family of Spain—a wife, husband, and three sons, all writers—the ways their lives intertwined with 20th-century Spanish history and many of its most influential figures (including Lorca), and the role that storytelling plays in all of our lives. He will read from his book The Age of Disenchantments, explain his research process (which included both locating archival documents and hanging out with Spanish intellectuals), and discuss the quijotesco desire that life be more like literature.
Aaron Shulman is the author of the non-fiction historical narrative The Age of Disenchantments: The Epic Story of Spain’s Most Notorious Literary Family and the Long Shadow of the Spanish Civil War (Ecco/HarperCollins, 2019). He attended Johns Hopkins University, and received his M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Montana. A former Fulbright scholar, his work has appeared in The Believer, The New Republic, The Wall Street Journal, El País (Spain), and the Los Angeles Review of Books, among many other places. He is the co-owner of Splash Literary, a book-coaching agency.

Zengierski Family Lectures in Spanish Literature and Culture, Spring 2021
This four-part series of presentations examines various aspects of the poet and playwright Federico García Lorca (1898-1936), his contemporaries, and his legacy. Born in the Spanish province of Granada, Lorca combines a championing of the socially marginalized, avant-garde experimentation, and reworking of Andalusian and Roma traditions such as flamenco. Assassinated near the start of the Spanish Civil War, his remains have never been found, putting him at the center of unresolved historical memory issues.
