The Institute for European and Mediterranean Archaeology (IEMA) at the State University of New York at Buffalo will be hosting its ninth annual international visiting scholar conference on contemporary theoretical issues in archaeology on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3, 2016 at the Greiner Hall, in the North Campus at SUNY Buffalo.

The conference, entitled Coming Together: Comparative Approaches to Population Aggregation and Early Urbanization, will use a cross-cultural framework to explore prehistoric population nucleation and ancient urbanization. An international group of anthropologists, prehistorians, and classicists from seven countries will discuss the integrative mechanisms that brought large populations together, the social practices and institutions that fostered the maintenance of aggregated settlements, as well as the impacts of aggregation on socio-cultural developments in the Old and New World.
